The sequence runs around ten minutes and traces the history of the building and of Istanbul’s water, from the Byzantine period through the Ottoman centuries to the present.

The cistern is the oldest structure in the world into which a full 360 degree projection mapping system has been built, and the installation won a Platinum MUSE Award in the experiential and immersive category.

What is projection mapping and how does it work here?

Projection mapping is the technique of projecting video onto an irregular three dimensional surface rather than a flat screen, with the image pre distorted so that it lands correctly on every curve, edge and column.

Inside the cistern that surface is 24 metres by 40 metres of Byzantine stonework, with 32 marble columns, 45 sail vaults and a ceiling reaching eleven metres. Every one of those surfaces has to be modelled so the image wraps around them without breaking.

The installation uses 29 projectors rated at 10,000 ANSI lumens, mounted on a truss system so that nothing is fixed to the historic fabric. The cabling runs beneath the modern visitor walkway and a plant room was built inside the cistern to serve the system. Interior humidity in the chamber runs close to 100 percent, which is the engineering problem that shaped the whole design.

The project was produced by Istanbul’s municipal culture company with the project partner TUCE Investment and the media production house Project Istanbul.

What does the projection show depict?

The sequence is built around Istanbul as a water city, which is the logical subject given where you are standing.

It moves through the waterways that supplied Byzantine Constantinople, the aqueducts and reservoirs that fed the palaces and baths, the Ottoman period and the reworking of the city’s water system, and finally the modern city. The award winning version of the show runs nine minutes and forty seconds and follows the building’s own transformation across sixteen centuries.

A section of the display presents the city’s collective memory as layers, reviving Byzantine and Ottoman imagery across the cistern walls, accompanied by icon painting and Turkish tile motifs. The Theodosius Cistern is far quieter than the Basilica Cistern at any hour, but the middle of the day still brings the largest groups.

For photography, the projection itself is the light source, so a quiet chamber matters more than the time of day. The mapping is designed to be read from the middle of the space, where the image wraps around you on all sides, and a wall position puts you inside the projection rather than in front of it.

How long should you allow for a visit?

Between 40 minutes and an hour, which breaks down as roughly ten minutes for the show itself, twenty to thirty minutes walking the chamber and reading the panels, and the rest for the entrance and the stairs.

The cistern is small enough to take in properly, which is the argument for it. At 960 square metres and 32 columns it is around a tenth of the size of the Basilica Cistern and holds a tenth of the columns, so it reads as a single comprehensible hall rather than a forest you walk through. Whether that is a strength or a weakness depends on what you came for, and the two are compared in Theodosius against the Basilica Cistern.

What are you actually standing in?

A Byzantine water reservoir roughly 1,600 years old, attributed on architectural grounds to Theodosius II, who reigned from 408 to 450. No foundation inscription survives, so the attribution is a considered judgement rather than a documented fact.

The chamber is 24 by 40 metres with a ceiling reaching eleven metres, carried on 32 columns with Corinthian capitals cut from Marmara Island marble brought in specially, decorated with acanthus leaves and topped with impost blocks. Forty five sail vaults span between them. The walls are around two and a half metres thick, coated on the inside with waterproof plaster, with the corners curved to spread the pressure of the water.

It supplied the baths of the Great Palace, the Nymphaeum and the Zeuxippus baths, working alongside the Basilica Cistern in the same water network.

The Arif Pasa mansion stood above it, used as Istanbul’s municipal building from 1912 and as the Eminonu municipal building from 1930 to 1984.
